Maxim of the Week

Morning Cloud's favourite time was greeting the dawn with a glass of freshly squeezed orange juice in her hand and her baby on her lap.
Maxim:
Savour the moment.

  1. I just love how the American Indians named their children with verbs, animals, and natural references. Must have truly solidified ones affinity and oneness with the natural surroundings. Beautifully drawn and expressed with such flowing delicate lines.

  2. Speaking of savouring the moment, I just now finished knitting a poncho, a total of 302 rows, but who's counting.

  3. Stickup,
Yes, really a different naming system. So much more descriptive and meaningful. One of my favourites is "Born with a Tooth."

I don't know if you're aware of the fact that these maxim illustrations start out as scribbles that I make with my eyes closed? Very fast. Then I try to make sense of the squiggles with additions of more lines made with my eyes open. I next make up an anecdote to go with it, followed by the real challenge of finding an appropriate maxim. Some are a little more right on than others, I must admit.

  4. Shirl,
Congratulations! Definitely a moment to savour and celebrate. Maybe put a little vodka in that glass of orange juice, now that you don't have to count rows any more!

What would your native American name be? Counts As She Knits? Knits With a Frown? Purls With Curses?
