Maxim of the Week

Richard and his dog, Rocket, feeling patriotic on Canada Day.
Maxim:
Let's run it up the flag pole and see if anyone salutes.

It really is Canada Day here.
Today, July 1st.
And this is the maxim that I traditionally post to celebrate this day.
In the past, though, I've used
"Richard and his dog, Rocket, proudly salute the flag on Canada Day:
 maxim:
"Stand up and be counted."
This time I thought I'd go a little further out on the maple tree limb and use a different quotation.

We'll be joining friends to go and ooh and ahh and slap biting mosquitoes as we watch the Canada Day fireworks that our little village explodes to mark the event.  It's a pretty decent show, traditionally ending in a wall of smoke from the big finale.

Happy Canada Day, my fellow Canucks!

  1. Happy Canada Day from the US of A. We might make it back tonight for the last pop or two of the pyrotechnics. After all it's nice to see the government burn money resulting in light and not just smoke.

    1. DCW,
Our little village display of the pyrotechnical skills of the local volunteer firefighters did not disappoint; nor did the traditional homemade strawberry shortcake, east coast style (biscuit vs sponge cake). Did you ever experience the strawberry shortcake at the White Spot?

  2. Nice to see that the "Rocket/Richard" duo are so proud to be Canucks -- even the dog does his salute with his little hind leg -- so cute.

    1. Shirl,
I'm so pleased you noticed Rocket's 3-legged salute. At least, I think he's saluting!
I hope your Canada Day BBQ went off with a bang rather than a whimper!

  3. hope you had a happy day! recently i was in stockholm on the swedish national day and the mood was awesome... royal family in a carriage drawn by horses in the streets of the city. maybe we enjoyed it the more as we don´t have "celebrations" in our country.

    1. Johanna,
That sounds like a very special celebration. I live in a small village so it's a small-scale celebration, but impressive because of that. Fireworks at 10 pm., bing bang boom, and that's it.

Being Canadians, the party's over, and we're apologizing today for having made so much noise.

    1. Owen,
Oh that Rocket is a trooper (rhymes with...). When we had a dog, she was a whimpering mass of quivering fur every 1st of July when the fireworks would happen.
      PS
Did you see my reply to your reply to my reply on last week's maxim? My with knows no bounds.
      :-D

  6. I don't know a lot of things about flags and Canada, but I like your illustration, especially the dog and the way it celebrates this day ;))
