It's been awhile since I've posted anything from the art "journal" I started this winter while I was in Vancouver.  Here's a double page spread that I made when I got back to my home studio a few months ago

There's a lot of collaged textured papers on these two pages:
*paper towels coated with metallic paints and acrylic medium that were rolled up with aluminum foil and left to dry, then flattened out  (I think that's how I made them but they're from my stash...so not sure anymore);
*foreign writings with interesting characters such as Arabic and Chinese found in free newspapers;
*ripped-up pages from old personal journals (who would want to read that stuff?!);
*clippings from an astrology calendar.

The legible text on this page says, "A Lifelong Journey" which fits neatly with the title of the facing page...

The Wheel
(which began its life as a large ad for a man's watch on this magazine page).

Both pages were subsequently attacked with acrylic paint, Caran D'Ache crayons, a bit of stamping and embossing and printing with paint on bubble wrap .  Heavy coatings of matte acrylic medium allow me to get rough with the work, rubbing it off with a damp cloth when really dissatisfied, incising the wet paint with a wooden skewer to make my own "hieroglyphs."

Things happen in this book when I least expect them to.
A little like that famous John Lennon quote,
"Life is what happens to you while you're busy making other plans."

I hope good things are happening with and for you, planned or not!

  2. So lovely. And that quote from John Lennon cracks me up every time I hear it. It is so true, and applies not only to life but to other bits of serendipity.

    1. Jenny,
      It's so true, isn't it. Especially when looking back, I tend to wonder more and more, how did that happen? What was I thinking?--when obviously I wasn't thinking at all. Life happens in spite of oneself.

    1. Ruby,
      I like your perception of the wheel being a doorway to another dimension (door of perception?). I was looking at it more with the attitude of "what goes up must come down"...or "what goes around comes around." I prefer your version.

  4. I think this is amazing! I like that you listed how your did it as it has inspired me, though I am totally NOT artistic, to give something like this a try.

    1. Danielle,
      Collage is such a forgiving and friendly means of art-making, available to any and everyone! And it only needs to be about pleasing/expressing yourself, not anyone else. Go for it!

  5. The texture, depth, beauty and complexity are like a visual concert that reflects both the unconscious composer and the conscious conductor.

      I see yet another career opening up for you: that of art reviewer! I must tuck away this comment of yours to bring out on those days when I am wrung with self doubt about the worth of my art making.

    1. Blue Sky,
      I actually wondered to myself if you'd like this one as it reminded me of your series about outer space/the planets. And look at all that metallic paint!
      ;-)

    1. I'm a bit confused by the "name" on this comment, and that there is no link to it. But as it is a lovely comment nevertheless, I will accept it at face value, with thanks.

    1. Johanna,
      I'm so happy this piece gets your fingers itching to be making art. That creative energy that's building up inside you will be stored up and come pouring out like good magic once you get that leisure time you're hoping for.

  10. Lynne, your work is beautiful...so lovely to see! I also love mixed media and collage, but haven't made much time for it lately. You're inspiring me to go do some more. Thank you for sharing!

      Inspiration is half the "battle"...more like play really. You are so right about having to make time to make art. I wonder why it's so hard to take the time to do what we enjoy so much? Oh well, let's "blame" it on summer!

    1. Jeanne,
      I'm glad you like these. I hadn't thought about submitting my art journal pages to Somerset, but it's worth a try! They might like something a little different (ie. a wordless journal). Thanks for the suggestion.

  12. These are so richly textured and alive. I love the "gilt." I for one would love an accompanying video of you in action! It must be amazing to witness you in the throes of process and inspiration...

    1. Stickup,
      I'd love to see such a video myself. I'm sure it would be hilarious as my "throes of process and inspiration" frequently involve spontaneous fits of unabashed dancing if a good tune happens to come on the radio! Maybe I should invest in a video cam...
      :-D
