Lest Not Ye Be Judged

After a very lengthy hiatus, I'm getting back to working on my Tarot Series.

©2011 L.Ciacco, XI Justice, acrylic on paper, 7.5 x 5 in.

"Justice/Adjustment:  Legal and financial considerations, balance and harmony, learing to to get along with others yet be true to yourself, partnerships, contracts."
Mary K. Greer, Tarot for Your Self, Newcastle 1984

I've not yet written texts to go with my cards but there is a lot of information online about the Tarot for anyone who might be interested in delving further.

I'm planning to make the 22 cards of the Major Arcana.  Thus far I have:

More on these as they develop.  They will be available as individual greeting cards as well as a deck of the Major Arcana.  (There, I've said it out loud in front of witnesses: now I have to do it!)

  1. Bravo...nothing like stating the commitment to keep yourself on track! This must be a rich experience on so many levels. I like the ones you have already done...very strong.
My lifelong cards are strength and star (8&17).

  2. Blue Sky,
I've been away from this series, and the Tarot, for so long that I mistakenly named this card "Judgment" when I first posted it here today. I was wondering why I had gone so far off the traditional illustration of Judgment with my imagery and then it dawned on me--I had illustrated "Justice." Makes more sense now.

You're right that it does provide a rich experience on many levels, making the cards. I did get a lot of personal insights when I began working with the Tarot, so I'm looking forward to getting back on that wavelength.
You seem truly blessed to have such life cards! Mine are the Fool and the Emperor (always at odds with each other, but much to learn from both).

  3. What a big, impressive project. So many details to consider and include in Tarot cards. Love what you've done so far.

I don't remember much about them now, but year ago I had a good friend who was really in to the Tarot and had made cards and written a book about the psychological tarot (in French).

    Look forward to seeing more.

  4. Now, I really want to be a fortune-teller and see a dreamy world in your beautiful cards.

    Well done.

  5. Oh, if you could only know how perfect that card is for me at this particular time of my life. It's eerie...

I don't really know anything about tarot cards, but you have piqued my interest. I like yours very much. They look so deliciously rich and hang together beautifully as a deck, as well as stand alone individuals. Kind of like a utopian society unto themselves!

  6. Oh yes, you definitely gotta do them all! :-)

Moments ago did I finally answer your question about the the doll, Lenci or not (no idea, only a hunch, but I love her anyway and would not give her away).

  7. Bonnie,
It's good to be involved in a longterm project, I find. Each card, though, provides its own satisfaction and sense of accomplishment in itself. You're right about all to consider for the symbolism of each card. I'm trying to keep it simple and somewhat obvious/easily recognizable. Your friend's Tarot deck and book sounds remarkable. So many insights into ones' psyche can be gleaned through the cards, rather than using them for "divination" purposes.

  8. Ötli,
"A dreamy world in my beautiful cards"--what a lovely tribute. Merci beaucoup!
Maybe you could prepare for your fortune teller career while waiting for the rest of my Tarot deck by buying yourself dangly hoop earrings, lots of bangle bracelets and brightly coloured full skirts, just to get in the mood.
    ;-)

  9. Stickup,
It really is getting a little bit eerie, the number of times you're finding something here that resonates with what you're going through in your life just now.
I was really fascinated by the Tarot for a couple of years and found a lot of personal insights in using the cards. Aside from the lessons to be learned, I love the wide variety of artwork that goes into each deck.

I like that you say my cards stand alone as well as work together. Utopian society, indeed. Isn't that what we're all looking for? Fierce independence combined with a sense of belonging...to
...what/where/whom? Or maybe that's just me, still looking for my "pack."

  10. Merisi,
Thanks for the encouragement! Now that I know you're watching, I'll have to be sure to come up with the goods.

Oh, I totally understand how you wouldn't part with that wonderful doll. What a find! My mother gave me a little Lenci doll, in traditional Neopolitan dress, I'd say. Yours has such sultry character. I would have been thrilled beyond reason to find her.
