For a Dancer

Today would have been contemporary dance pioneer and legend Martha Graham's 118th birthday.  I used to be a dancer; I studied ballet from age 3 to 13, then went on to jazz, and was later in a couple of small contemporary dance troupes for a number of years.  To this day, you can find me bopping around in my kitchen, especially when my daughter is home on a visit and we crank up the tunes and pull out all the stops, fuelled by wine and a shared sense of the ridiculous.

Here's my birthday card for Martha, composed of a photo I made of a bouquet of flowers combined with a picture of Martha I downloaded from the internet.
I wanted to give the impression of a charcoal and chalk drawing.

And here's a favourite song of mine by Jackson Browne that seemed more than appropiate.

...
"Just do the steps that you've been shown
By everyone you've ever known
Until the dance becomes your very own
No matter how close to yours
Another's steps have grown
In the end there is one dance you'll do alone
...
Into a dancer you have grown
From a seed somebody else has thrown
Go on ahead and throw some seeds of your own
And somewhere between the time you arrive
And the time you go
May lie a reason you were alive
But you'll never know"

I feel pretty sure that Martha Graham knew exactly the reason she was alive.
As my ballet teacher used to say,
"Make a dance of it!"
Seems good advice to apply to one's life,
wouldn't you say?

  1. Oh to be a dancer and then when you add music and art I think you get the whole picture...fueled by wine is good, too. Happy birthday, Martha! How many dancers are her decedents?

  4. Martha's birthday card is beautiful! Coincidentally (or not), I have the same birthday, which is also Salvadore Dali's birthday. I also used to be a dancer; I performed in a middle eastern dance troupe for 10 years.

  5. Loved the Jackson Browne performance.
The artwork is beautiful,I think she would have liked it.Isn't she the one who said,"dance your own dance because no one else can do it for you"?

Make a dance of it sounds like good advice!

    Enjoy your weekend!

  6. Forest Dream Weaver,
I'm not familiar with that comment but it's a goodie! How about "dance like no one is watching"? But that doesn't seem quite appropriate when talking about professional dancers.
    Happy weekending to you, too!

  7. Note: Apparently Blogger was having some “issues” yesterday and wiped out some very nice comments that I’d received and hadn’t yet replied to. Fortunately, I receive them all by e-mail as well so was able to round them up and post them here again:

That makes me wonder what it would be like to be in a studio with canvas stapled to the wall, a few bottles of wine, inspiring music playing, and kindred spirits dancing and painting all together! Maybe when I go to a retirement home I'll organize the seniors in the activity room!

I never really had the body of a dancer (although you can get away without being willowy as a contemporary dancer)but I had a great love of dance and my teachers and mentors remarked on it. It's a wonderful release, even if just done in one's mind.

No, silly, that would be Tina!

Wow! That is one amazing planetary conjunction to produce such creative people on the same day (not same year,of course). And can you be found shimmying around your kitchen with some rhythmical middle eastern music blaring away for inspiration? 10 years of being involved in dancing, you can't ever get that out of your system! If you got it, move it, I say!

  8. There is a lot of motion and expressiveness in this picture. I do feel as if this picture were dancing. You captured that idea very well. A beautiful picture.

  9. Shelley,
I'm so pleased you picked up on the feeling of movement in this composition. That you feel as if the picture were dancing is a wonderful compliment. Thanks so much!
