When the Red Red Robin

When I was a little girl, one of my favourite songs was "When the red red robin comes bob-bob-bobbin' along."  The other day, our yard was practically seething with robins.  I had never seen so many in one place, all bob-bob-bobbin' along for worms, I guess.  Each one was plump and robust looking, with his red waistcoast practically bursting at the seams.

©2011 L.Ciacco, Red Red Robin & Heron, watercolour on paper, 7 x 5 in.

Maybe this is what subconsciously prompted me to paint this image,
which was entirely spontaneous, when I went to my studio.

Looks like a curious heron also popped by to see what all the twittering was about.

It had been awhile since I'd put paint to paper and I just felt the urgeDo you know what I mean?

"I'm just a kid again, doin' what I did again!"

  1. Oh that's truly fabulous! I've been seeing robins everywhere the past couple of days myself. I love the tough lil' beggars.

  2. Could be my age, but I do prefer Doris to Lady GaGa.

  3. Forgot to mention, I love that watercolour. I think it portrays happiness vs soulful.

  4. tattytiara,
They're the first sign of spring and have such a cheery chirp; how could one not love them? Although, sometimes,at the crack of dawn when one has had a rather late night, the chirping isn't quite as charming.

  5. Shirl,
I don't think Lady Gaga has done a version of Red Red Robin as yet. It would be interesting to do a comparison between her rendition and Doris's!

  6. shirl,
I'm pleased it pleases you! I was pleased to have that little red-breasted guy pop up like that out of nowhere, much like the blighters do when spring has suddenly sprung.

  9. Stickup,
Dynamism and wing-fluttering contained in a small space: Surprizing what happens when one just lets go with some random brush strokes of watercolour paints. Fun was had! A pleasing outcome was a bonus.

  10. sukipoet,
I enjoyed seeing the various images Doris was sporting throughout the decades in the video montage. From steamy to demure.

This little robinesque picture was just a playful letting go...letting off some creative steam. Maybe I should do so more often. I don't know what sort of painting is actually "usual" for me. You'd know what I mean if you visited my house!
Not warm here yet. Nope. Pierre is still keeping the woodstove going most evenings. But the grass has suddenly turned green! No sign of leaves on trees, though.

  11. Love the intertwining of shapes and the colours.Though for a robin, getting this close to a heron may not be such a good idea!

  12. Forest Dream Weaver,
Ah, it's a peaceable kingdom in this version of Birdland.

  13. this is beyond wonderful, it's like you have captured the bird-essence, all vibration and flow of life, there is something menacing about it too (i have always felt that way when contemplating a bird's beak). i wish i could photograph all those robins! but a photo cannot summon up an entire world like your painting does, in this case...

  14. Roxana,
I am chirping with delight from your praise, and blushing a little, too-- a shade of robin's breast red! In fact, I was just painting energy, and the birds popped into the field after I had all the colours in, if that makes any sense to you. I "found" the birds in the colours' shapes and outlined them with the black lines so others could see them.

  16. My goodness, Leovi!--You have certianly travelled far back in time here. I'm happy to revisit this happy little robin with you. Maybe it is just a little bit like some of your wonderful abstract photographs? Thanks for taking the time to explore and leave a comment.
