Ping Yu goes into the stockroom of the Porcelain Emporium and brings out another "rare" Chinese vase to replace the one she just sold.
Maxim:
There's a sucker born every minute.
I thought this particular maxim was fitting after the picture I posted yesterday (see below) and the recent mini-tours through Vancouver's Chinatown that I blogged about over on Décolleté. I for one don't mind buying genuine fake Chinoiseries! I was like a kid in a candy store roaming the aisles between shelves crammed and jammed with colourful teapots, figurines, soup bowls, china soup spoons, embroidered linens, silk dresses and bags, and paper parasols; to say nothing of the piles of little doo-dads that one could only marvel at and guess at their use. The two small items I did buy (for under $5) didn't quite hold together once I removed them from their plastic packaging...Sounds like fodder for another maxim: "You get what you pay for."
I prefer the fabulous, easily replacable fakes. Precious objects are just little lumps of stress daring you to break them.
ReplyDeleteHah! I had the same dilemma when I was in Japan. At least yours can get away with "Made in China" on the back! ♥
ReplyDeleteAin't that the truth. Love your fluid, colorful drawing!
ReplyDeleteTatty,
ReplyDeleteWhat?--You mean those arent't real diamonds in your tiara?!
Margaret,
ReplyDeleteAt least you were in Japan! Actually, I'm pretty sure I was sold some "Made in China" leather goods when I was in Italy but the tags had been removed.
Stickup,
ReplyDeleteI have a set of watercolours that were made in Russia and are an absolute joy to work with because of their flow and brilliant hues. Truly a case of getting what I paid for, in the best sense.
As long as Ping Yu says Tang Yu. Courtesy is sometimes rarer than the poor Céline.
ReplyDeleteDCW,
ReplyDeleteI believe she said "Ah so" as I exited, but I can't be certain...surely it couldn't have been something more graphically descriptive!
haha this is so funny and cute!!! :-)
ReplyDeleteRoxana,
ReplyDeleteI'm happy that you get my sense of humour.
