Something Borrowed

Something new for me...using a model supplied by some generous folks at Deviant Art to create an otherwise original photo-painting.

While it did feel odd to use another photographer's work (Helle Gry, no link available) of a model unknown to me (Maria Amanda), it was terrific fun to work on making it my own and creating a different context.  Please go here to see the original photo that I borrowed.

This is another version that I posted on my Facebook page, Offerings.

There are other versions that happened along the way as well; the process provided a most rewarding realm of experimentation, discovery and learning.

Of course it would be great to have one's own model to dress up and pose, but barring that, this alternative will have to suffice. There is also the distinct possibility that these digital "photo-paintings" could be a jumping off point for making works of paint on canvas or paper. Already I'm thinking of this as fodder for a card in my presently stalled Tarot Series, which are all hand drawn and painted. (I would link to the Tarot Series here but for some reason the pictures are no longer showing, doubtlessly due to some diabolic Google+ machinations!)

Anyway, I hope someone out there likes this detour I took.
I'll be flitting around to visit my blog friends very soon--
am looking forward to seeing what directions you're flying!

  1. Beautiful ... you certainly made this model your own ... the image has so much going on what with wings and all. I thought the first one was my favorite but I can see such beauty in the muted one. The texture on both is spectacular. This image could easily be a starting point of all sorts of explorations and goes way beyond light play.I'll be on the watch!

    1. Thanks so much! It's great to bring my painterly experience of layering of textures to this digital format, and exciting to imagine the next step of taking the digital experience back to the paint world. Whether or not I actually do so... at the very least, it's good to recognize the possibilities and be excited/inspired by them. I'm glad you get this! :)

  4. that´s a cool idéa. As you say, getting youw own model is not easy.

Hi, found you at Bonnies. As Bonnie with PAF is taking a break and Lori with MOM seem to have vanished from earths surface we are getting short of PhotoArt memes. I already have NF Abstract but are considering starting a new “NF DigitalArt Meme”. If you are interested let me know what you think.

    1. Yes, that's an exciting proposal. I don't really like working with memes as what I make tends to be rather spontaneous (accidental) but I do love the idea of having a place where those experimenting with photo art can be inspired by each other. I really do feel the need for a space where digital artists of all levels can share their work. If you start a new digital art site I will gladly participate.

  5. I hear you about getting good models. You don't realize how valuable a good model is until you want to photograph someone with a specific goal in mind rather than the random stranger. Looks like you found a great workaround to produce a delightful fairytale outcome.

    1. Getting set up with personal stock of a model would be a photographic project in and of itself, wouldn't it. A big commitment of time and intent. Preplanning! My daughter is coming for a visit this summer. Maybe I can nab her for a few hours and get some shots for future use. But other than her, I don't even know anyone to ask. The other thing is, setting up a suitable space/backdrop for photographing...to make it easy to cut the model's image from the background to incorporate into the new digital setting. So, yeah, definitely easier to borrow from those willing to share...but I still find it an uneasy collaboration. I'm happy you appreciate the outcome, though, and that you understand my dilemma. :)

Amazing transformation of the model, and also thanks for the tip on where to get some stock photos. May have to check that out for future photos. :)

  7. both versions are beautiful and you are clearly very talented.
i happen to like the second version best as i see a leering gargoyle type (or two) and really enjoy the subtlety in that detail . . .
    thank you for sharing.
btw: i've come via NatureFootstep and the digital art survey.

    1. Oh, I love it that you are seeing things in the digital collage that even I didn't know were there! Thanks so much for visiting via NF. We may be meeting more there in the future, hopefully.

  8. incredible creations! i like both variations equally.
and i hate google+, if this is the reason for no longer showing the tarot cards. why can´t they leave everything as is and always change a running system. i will never understand that, so frustrating.

    1. Oh,in this world it's always "new and improved" no matter what the product. I believe in the old saying, "If it aint broke, don't fix it!" I don't understand Google+ and resent that they have control over the images I post. Anyway, I'm very happy that you can visit here and greatly appreciate your kind and generous remarks, Johanna.
