Your Maxim of the Week

Though Ginette had no qualms about showing her painting at the artists' Show and Tell with Potluck Lunch gathering, she felt far less confident about her homemade potato salad.
Maxim:
The proof of the pudding is in the eating.

  1. i feel your pain, ginette... artistic endeavors do not always translate to the kitchen. country time pink lemonade is just about the only homemade item coming from this kitchen.

    1. I see you come from the "just add water and stir" school of cooking, Beth. This maxim is based on an artist friend of mine whose claim to cooking fame (or infamy) was that she couldn't even make Jell-O (she'd tried but failed). Truth to tell, I'm always a little anxiety ridden when I have to come up with something to bring to a potluck, unless it's artwork.

  2. Potato salad and paintings are alike - infinitely variable and none able to please everybody. I hope she put chickpeas and curry in it.

    1. And one artist's masterpiece can look like a potato salad to an art critic.

  3. The salad I mean, not the painting.

    1. Oh, that's too bad; I was getting rather excited about the idea of gluing garbanzos onto my next canvas and using a little curry for colour and an added scratch'n'sniff element.

  4. well she is so cute. I agree, sometimes my potato salad is super and other time bland. Never thought of adding chickpeas and curry though. I think her painting at any rate is really cool.

    1. I just wish I could whip up paintings as quickly and easily as the one that Ginette is carrying! And I agree with you about the inconsistency of potato salads. I find that anyone else's is always better than my own, though. Not sure about the chickpea element, but curry sounds promising.

    1. No one is perfect! Oh, but that's another maxim for another day.

  6. In the summer I attend neighborhood pot lucks and BBQ's and I can say it is sometimes a fearful place...not everyone is a good cook. Some strange concoctions appear on the table but the neighborhood is attached to these functions...for me it is in the friendship not the salads. I love your drawing...art and bowl!

    1. Art and bowl! Wouldn't that be a great name for a blog about making art and making food. Or maybe for an artist whose hobby is 10-pin bowling (not sure how likely that is). The best thing about potlucks is that there's usually something on the table that someone is going to like to eat. Though it's a little daunting to find your own dish virtually untouched when you go to take it home. I mean, not that it's happened to me or anything...

  7. I saw a documentary about the film director David Lynch who has made paintings with rotting meat. Life is stranger than fiction!

    1. There was a meat dress exhibited in the National Gallery of Canada in 1991! It caused quite an outrage.

Then there was Lady Gaga wearing a meat dress for a video in 2010, apparently. I'm thinking that maybe Ginette should take some inspiration from this art meets...meat phenomenon and whip one up to wear to the next artists' potluck show and tell.
