Bringing in Colour

Winter days in southeastern New Brunswick tend to be somewhat colourless, other than an occasional burst of blue sky or subtle shadows playing on the snow.  While splashing about in my art journal recently I couldn't resist the urge to bring in some unexpected colours and playful markings.

Feels like the energy of spring is trying to burst through. Alas, still a long way to go yet.  Thank goodness for a few boxes of colours and patterns to get me through otherwise dullish winter days.

The great thing about having an art journal is that one can be completely uninhibited therein.  Rather like the equivalent of running naked out into the snow--but warmer.

Let loose a little and lighten up your day!

  1. Love the combination of clarity, complexity and colour, Lynne. Too artistic to remain in a journal?

    1. Bonnie,
I'm glad you find clarity as well as complexity in it. Sometimes I worry that I just have too much going on in a page.
The journal will have to remain just that, a journal. Using it for experimenting/play, I didn't allow for any buffer pages, so one "masterpiece" is on the flip side of another!

  2. Your journal is a great play area...this is colorful, free and a spirit lifter and done maybe without a run in the snow?! Spring Forward!

    1. Blue Sky,
Ah, you know me too well--no run in the snow for me is right! My spirit was in great need of a lifting so it was reassuring to find this energy and these bright colours spilling out across the page.

  3. The colours of a clear winter's day, with a flash of spring green. Warm in your studio, and with your artist's imagination, you can be anywhere!
As I type snow is gently falling so maybe my wish is about to be granted!

    1. Ruby,
You know, I hadn't really thought of them as colours from a clear winter's day, but with that crisp blue and white accents, I see the influence.

Oh, I hope you get enough snow to really relish and enjoy its crisp beauty!

I love the spring time feel of this. My last background page came out a little muddy..so need to get back into playing with my paints to cheer it up a bit.

    1. Danielle,
I didn't recognize you at first!

A muddy background just cries out for some splashes and dots and dashes of bright colours to resuscitate it! Let loose, girl.

    1. Diva,
I have to admit, my journal intrigues me too because I never know what's going to happen in it. It all just sort of creeps up on me and then explodes off the page. I see you've begun a new journal, which looks most intriguing, as well!

  7. "but warmer" in the studio.. I like that... and agree.
These blue splashes are what I want. and all these separate parts and paintings all brought together on your page makes a wonderful escape from that snow outside. Thanks!!

    1. Gwen,
Thank goodness for that little thermostat to turn on the heat in my studio otherwise it would be about as cold in there as it is outside, minus the windchill factor. I think the fear of the white page of snowbound winter is far more daunting than that of the sketchbook or canvas! I wonder if there's such a thing as rainbow-tinted snow glasses. Someone should definitely invent them!
