Dragon Breath

Vancouver has a very large Asian population and while I was there this winter, I took advantage of the many newspaper articles about the Chinese New Year, clipping images and words to make a collage in my art journal.

"According to the Chinese Five Element Astrology Calendar, 2012 is the Year of Water Dragon  . The color of Water in Five Elements system is related to Black. Therefore we can say 2012 is a Black Dragon, Water Dragon or Black Water Dragon year.

Dragon contains Earth, Water and Wood. It's a source of Water and It is also called the Water Dam in Chinese astrology. Since Water  of 2012 comes with Dragon. it implied Water from the sky makes a dam overflow. Therefore 2012 is a strong Water year.

Dragon is a legendary animal and it is symbol of emperor in China. Since the Dragon is coated with mysterious color, Chinese consider that the dragon is unpredictable, untouchable and people cannot see its head and tail at the same time. Therefore, we might see something unexpected happening in 2012."

Something unexpected?  Seems many interpreters of the Mayan calendar are in agreement.  Could be a tumultuous year...if not the end of the world (at least as we know it)!  I'm hoping for something more along the lines of breathing in some of those profits the dragon is purported to breathing out.

How's the "new" year going for you thus far?
 Any unexpected arisings?
Profits coming out of the yin yang?
Dragon breath blowing hot and cold?
Have the floodgates opened in some way for you?
Or has it just been a soggy spring?

May we all live long and prosper!

  1. love your year of the dragon collages and thoughts. here the gov't issued a beautiful chinese new year stamp for the dragon year. some distruption here as my brother sold the land adjacent to the trailer where i live. this may cause some changes in me and my living situtaion too too soon to tell. plus lots of rain or so it seems to me.

  2. sukipoet,
Definitely sounds like a shake-up in energy coming your way with the sale of adjoining land. I wonder if you saw that one coming. Well, maybe it's the tail of the dragon and when the head comes into view...look out! Rain rain...good for the burgeoning plants, but can get one's spirits down.

Canada Post put out a Year of the Dragon stamp, too. You can see it in the corner of the dragon page. Maybe the dragon is going to fire us into action this year.

  3. I was wondering what had been flying over our house in the night with a great wooshing of wings and leaving trails of fortune cookie messages in its wake... now I know !

Strange things in the air in 2012, a large shipwreck off Italy close to the 100 year anniversary of the Titanic, that must be the water dragon's work, no ?

Well, otherwise, no floodgates opening around here, still slaving away to pay the bills, that's about all... Thanks for this fresh breath of dragon air...

  4. Oh, I like this! Wonderful how you placed the dragon in profile and the adjoining page with so many colorful images.
I loved a couple of dragons (according to Chinese astrology) and it was a wild being a monkey (Compatible according to Chinese astrology!)
So far the year has been good...not much rain here.

  5. Owen,
Best check the mirror to see if your eyebrows got singed from the fiery dragon breath. Certainly the Italian ship wreck was an unexpected event, watery and dramatic. As marked on those maps of yore, "There be dragons here." Dragons in the dead of night, trailing fortune cookies in their wake?...that's the way the cookie crumbles.

  6. Blue Sky,
Maybe the unexpected need not be unpleasant? A monkey and a dragon, who'da thunk it? But yes, I can imagine a monkey would be one able to ride the dragon's back and keep up with his wild flights. I wish you continued good fortune and bright skies with exciting flights of fancy to inspire your art.

  7. Great to have this interesting material to work with. The claws an flame breath look pretty menacing.I didn't know about the water connection, maybe that's why we've been having so much wet and windy weather of late!

  8. Ruby,
Doubtlessly the water dragon has something to do with it. I mean, normally, it hardly ever rains in Scotland, right?
You're right about it having being fun to have lots of material to play with, just cutting up newspapers and making a little tribute to the new year.
