Maxim of the Week

Motumboo is proud to demonstrate his traditional tribal dance to the tourists but is a little resentful of them comparing it to something they call the Hokey-Pokey.
Maxim:
He who pays the piper calls the tune.

  1. I'm looking for a good translation in French, but I think I understood ithe maxim.

  2. Ötli,
I don't know if this is a "good" translation, mais voici:

"Motumboo est fier de montrer la danse traditionnelle de son tribu mais il n'aime pas que les touristes l'appellent le 'Hokey Pokey'" (ce qui est une danse très simple que les enfants nord-americains apprennent très jeune).

Maxim: Qui a l'argent décide la danse.

  3. He should be happy the tourists are not comparing it to "I'm a Little Teapot".

  5. Shirl,
That reminds me of the time one of the musicians from Africa was visiting us and took to wearing the chicken-shaped tea cosy from my teapot on his head as a hat, quite proudly.

  6. sukipoet,
Well, it's like this, if I pay you a wad of money to write me a poem about an apple pie and you take that money, then you're just gonna have to write about apple pie, even though you may feel more inspired to write about chocolate cake. Hmmm...I think I neglected to have any dessert tonight.

  7. What fun illustration. Nor should we spend, we can not be a slave that pays.

  9. Leovi,
Excellent point. Why pay the piper when we can make our own music or dance to the tunes on the radio.

  10. Julie,
I like to think he has a certain dignity, in spite of the proprietorial attitudes of the tourists, who often like to classify everything new in some familiar way in order to feel more in control of the situation, I think.

  12. Keith,
If you can't leave 'em laughing, at least leave them smiling. Hey--I just made up a maxim! Now I'm smiling.
    :-) See?
