BURIED TREASURE: Paint and Paper Surprise

Seth Apter of The Altered Page has invited artists to dig through their past posts and come up with a piece of "buried treasure" that they feel should be in the spotlight again.  It's also a great way to find other artists hidden away on Blogger. Seth will be posting the links to all the participants on June 12, and it will remain on his sidebar indefinitely.  Happy digging!

I'm reposting "Little Queenie" as she combines my love of mixing collage and painting, and flying by the seat of my pants, expecting the unexpected.

It's been awhile since I've painted.  I'm trying to sneak up on it, I guess.  Yesterday I put together a collage of various papers.  Today I decided I didn't like it so might as well smear some paint over it.  I wish I'd have followed my impulse to scan it before I started in with the paint, because you would never believe how I got from there to here...

 I had no preconceptions or expectations when I grabbed a tube of unbleached titanium acrylic paint and began slapping it on.  The collage was just random papers--no image.  Many times I thought I'd lost the whole thing and was about to end up with nothing more than a muddy mess.  But gradually this little lady made her presence known.

 I hope you, my blog friends, 
are connecting with your creative powers 
much as the the little queen in the picture 
is growing into her own.

    How lovely! Besides the face, my favorite thing is the little hand with the painted nails jutting out of the piece on the right. The texturing and layering of colors is beautiful. I love the strokes in the hair too. I also love the controlled frenzy of activity and energy evident in the creative process. And last, I love how your artwork shows the evidence of somehow being coaxed from a deep level within.

    Is it the voluptuous lips, the "gimme gimme" attitude, the crown, or the fact that you're the queen of everything that make you identify so strongly with this little portrait? (Beef knows you so well!)

    You know it's just your big sister "goofing around"! I don't mean anything by it (just teasing as big sisters are wont to do).

    I must have been subconsciously inspired by your icon of you in the crown and polka dot dress. And the sensuous lips.

    I think I could fall in love with this queen... she's disturbingly lovely... There's so much to love about this that I'm not even going to try to make a list, as in, let me count the ways I love thee, fair queen...

    She looks a bit tormented by something. She must have very strong willpower, to have overcome the suction of the muddy mess, and make herself known...

    I've heard somewhere that you're a sucker for intense blue eyes...maybe that has something to do with it? The little queen is so flattered by your response that she is seriously considering making you a knight.

    Is it her lips, between a pout about to cry or the firm set of displeasure ??? Or is it the small splash of green under her right eye, and even smaller touch of green under her left eye ? The slight blush in her left cheek ? The petit nose, yet finely formed ? The searing blue gaze ? The tilt of her head, inquiring, accusing ? Strands of black hair falling loose from under her... her crown ? The cornflower blue with white dotted decoration on her blouse ? All of these combine to raise her into the pantheon of the unforgettable.

    The little queen is not immune to flattery but as much as she would love to knight you, she is having trouble lifting the sword to the height of your shoulders, let alone over your head--in spite of your being on bent knee before her. I suggest you don a neck brace and pith helmet posthaste.

    It's wonderful that you are so smitten with this little piece of my art. It must resonate with something deep inside of you--perhaps being the father of two beautiful princesses yourself, and having lived intimately with all their moods and mysteries and feminine wiles that twist you around their delicate little fingers and keep you coming back for more. Just a theory.

      How lovely that you pointed out the jewel in her crown. It reminds me of something a little kid would colour in big and bold on a paper crown of their own fashioning. And the flower stands in as her sceptre.
      The weekend ahead is full of promise as my sister is arriving from the west coast.

    Lynne, I just popped in from Seth's Buried Treasure project and enjoyed my visit to your blog. You have a wonderful eye for detail and such a unique and original style of your own. I would also have loved to have seen the before scans. Taking pictures of the process when I create is also something I tend to forget as well. I think it is because it is easy to get so involved in the art that it always seems to be an after though and only then do we think Woops. Your work is truly imaginative and an inspiration and I will be following your blog through both Google and Bloglovin'
