Continuing with my painting explorations, this is what recently emerged

It started life about 2 years ago with a physically altered (scratched, scraped, drawn &quartered painted-on) photo of sailboats in the upper left hand corner. There were some dreamy suggestions of trees and flowers wafting about the canvas. But when I started adding paint to it the other day, I couldn't deal with those sailboats so ended up deep-sixing them. Having no idea where I was going, but just trusting my process of getting there, this is the picture that emerged. I guess an alternate title could be Subterranean Homesick Blues, but Bob Dylan already took that. Showing this painting to a friend recently, she remarked that it has a Chagall feeling to it. I took that as a great compliment.

It really does have that "light as air and floating" sense that Chagall achieved. I bet the colors are glorious, with many layers interacting. Lovely!

You're right about the colours--I had a terrible time trying to get a reasonable representation of them up on the screen but finally had to make do with what I'd arrived at. Isn't it like that with almost all art, so much better when you see it "live." I'm so pleased that you understood about the quality of the colours.

Just a hint of Chagall and much of you in it--wonderful! The dreamy colors work perfectly with the mystery of the images.

ReplyDeleteNice to hear that it's just a hint of Chagall--like a tip of the hat, maybe? It wasn't intentional, but emerged from my subconscious, I guess. Dreamy colours/mysterious images--wow! Such lovely adjectives to have applied to my painting!

ReplyDeleteNice to see that you rode on in here. Music to my ears that you recognize a style that is my own. It's only taken me about 30 years to find it! Oddly, I feel like I'm getting back to a place where I started from before I went to art school, but with the added layers of time and experience.
