Maxim of the Week

Although Gayla was very serious about her position as back-catcher on the baseball team, she brought a certain sense of whimsical creativity to her uniform.
Maxim:
Think outside the box.

  1. Hi Louciao:)

A thought provoking quote and something to ponder.

Every one doesn't have this gift of thinking outside the box. At least I can't. My mind is set on many things and therefore, my thinking is very standard and ordinary. Perhaps I stick to routine method of thinking for survival. To be safe and secure. Not to take the risk or putting my neck out. I survived so long but not with much success.

It is said that when the tortoise wants to move ahead it puts its neck forward. When it wants to stay in the same place it keeps its neck inside a shell. I wonder if this will apply to people who think out of the box. All great inventions, discoveries, achievements were made possible by people who think out of the box.

Recently I saw an advertisement by a mobile company----WHY DO THE DONE, DO THE NEW.

FROM TODAY ONWARDS, THE MINUTE BECOMES THE NEW SECOND.

I thought this advertisement is really revolutionary.

I wonder if you see such advertisements in your place.

Many, many thanks for making me think out of the box. I'm really happy:)

  2. Hi Joseph,
I'm happy that my simple little anecdotes and maxims provoke such deep thinking on your part!

You say you have "survived so long but not with much success" which makes me wonder about how one defines "success." I think there, again, we will have to (learn to) think outside the box and define success in our own terms. And if we are defining it for ourselves, I think it would be wise to choose a definition that will cause satisfaction rather than unhappiness with who we are, what we have done, where we are in life. Learning to see the glass as half full rather than half empty? Ah, but that is a maxim for another day!

I haven't seen the ad you described, but it makes me think of that saying that became popular in the '70s, "Today is the first day of the rest of your life." I think the mobile ad is an updated version for the new millennium.

Thank you for taking the time to leave such a detailed comment. It is much appreciated, and makes me think a little deeper as well.

  3. Well, aren't you a wee bundle of talent!! Wonderful site you have here, just thought I'd drop in and now I'm trying to think outside the box. I assume it's not a wine box?

  4. I've found some of my best inspiration at the bottom of a wine box! But as you suggest, that would perhaps necessitate a different maxim.

Lovely to see you here, Saj!
